Eat
Given the region’s focus on sheep farming, delectable mutton and lamb dishes are the order of the day in most of the restaurants in Sutherland. There is also a strong tradition of locally baked delicacies including koeksusters and boerebeskuit or rusks.
Given the distance from fresh produce suppliers most vegetables are preserved and local delicacies such as curried green beans or beetroot preserved in vinegar and sugar are the order of the day. An interesting local treat is preserved quince pieces (quinces are common in Sutherland) served with lamb or game.

Sutherland is devoid of any well-known fast food outlets so be prepared to relax and enjoy traditional boerekos that takes a little bit longer to prepare than a takeaway hamburger or fried chicken.
