Food
The dining room at the Lord Milner Hotel is a reflection of the historic ambience of Matjiesfontein. The dining room is decorated with a variety of period antiques including an antique clock reputed to be one of only three in the world. The unique wooden ceiling is supported centrally by an ornate cast iron pillar, a twin said only to be found at Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth’s official residence in London. Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room and the hotel’s red jacketed maître d’s offer guests a variety of fine Cape wines. The cuisine is redolent of the Karoo and the local Karoo lamb dishes are the speciality on the menu. The waitresses wear open bonnets during the day and closed bonnets at night, like the sunflower.
The Lairds Arms, the hotel’s bar, offers a variety of light dishes during the day for the passing traveller.
